St John's in Trouble!
Home Tower Gift Day

Up

Strolling through Collingham during the Autumn of 2004 St John the Baptist Church could be seen with its tower in stilts! This was the result of speedy action on the part of the Rector and PCC to quickly remedy faults which had been spotted. The finials (the four spire-like spikes) on the corners of the tower were insecure and were considered dangerous.

The Church and its grounds were sadly immediately closed, and remained closed for three months to the consternation of the parishioners. It was finally re-opened to great rejoicing on 25th December 2004.

Yes, St John's is being enveloped in scaffolding, ready to repair those faulty finials. See the workmen - one up, and one at ground level? How's your head for heights?

A week or two later, scaffolding had reached the top of the tower, and finials were removed, repaired and reinstated one by one. The left hand finial was missing here - removed for repair.

A tour round the building showed the size of the task. Notice how carefully the double layer of scaffolding was erected for the safety of the workmen. The graveyard was kept remarkably tidy in spite of the upheaval.

This gives a glimpse of the way the area was 'roped' off to make it reasonably safe for visitors to family graves.

A wonderful view over the splendid Yew trees. Note the time on the Church clock. Yes it was kept working throughout!

It's a very tall building. How brave the workmen must be who deal in such repairs. How lucky we were to get them so quickly.

Now there will have to be a big fund raising campaign to raise many thousands of pounds to pay for the repairs.
