A Scarecrow
competition was held in the village a week or so before the May Fayre. It was
intriguing to see what superb models people had made. They were displayed in
front of the makers' houses, and the Memorial Hall, and caused quite a stir in the
village. At the Fayre they were all presented on Stocks Hill for the village
(and web-site visitors) to see.

Oohhh! Is that a scarecrow mummy? Are they really scary?
Well, not really dear, but real ones sometimes scare off crows who eat the
carefully sown fields of crops.

Wow! That one looks scary.

'Have people in the village made all these? Have children made them?'
'Yes, with
perhaps a little help from their parents.'

Is that a Humpty Dumpty scarecrow? Isn't he
super. Let's go and get the
Alice story - Through the Looking Glass from the village library - and read all about him.

Here's a colourful little girl scarecrow. She has a lovely doll's tea-set to
play with. Is that her mummy in the background? Her mummy's smart, isn't she?

Isn't
the girl scarecrow beautiful? Can we play with her tea-set? Better not darling, just
tell her you like it and maybe we'll get your tea-set out when we get home. Oh! but
it's not nearly so nice as hers. AND, I'm pleased she's not really so scary.

Looks
as though the little girl scarecrow is very popular doesn't it? May I touch her
dress mummy? Well, we're not supposed to, but maybe on this occasion, if you're
careful.

Gosh! He's a splendid looking fellow isn't he? What are the medals he's
wearing awarded for? Now what is he going to do with that catapult? I hope he
won't do any damage or hurt anyone. No, he's sworn to be careful.
And at the end of a glorious
afternoon a big black cloud was spotted coming towards he village. This caused
something of a scamper for shelter (or home). The heavens opened and there was a
downpour. But the day could not be spoiled,
it was so well presented and attended; and everyone enjoyed themselves (and the
storm!) immensely.
