Journey into Deepest Africa!

From Eastern Transvaal to the Eastern Cape of South Africa

We landed in Johannesburg after an eleven-hour flight and made straight for the South African Guide Dog Association after dropping our bags at the hotel. I could see this was going to be action packed and our feet were not going to touch the ground. At the centre they train about 60 guide dogs for the blind a year along with dogs for the deaf and disabled. After lunch we visited Midrand Snake Park where entry is on a donation basis to help fund the centre. We saw lizards, tortoises and crocodiles as well.Keith Africa 1.jpg (53602 bytes) Photo by Kathy Martin.  Click to see larger photo, then click back button <-- top left of screen to return.

On day two we departed for Johannesburg and the wonderful natural sites of the Eastern Transvaal and Sable Falls. Here we panned for gold at the Pilgrim’s Gold Mine but like some of the early pioneers we were unlucky. At God’s Window the views went on for miles and miles. One particular one was the Blyde River Canyon.

Thursday we travelled through the Kruger National Park passing elephants, rhino and zebra hearing about the snakes and spiders that lived there as well. We partook in a blind walk with Braille, there were things to touch and smell on route. Then we were off to the Kingdom of Swaziland the following day through passport control and a change of currency.

A long drive to Zululand saw us ending up in Durban. On route we visited a Zulu village, where we had lunch and were shown some traditional dancing, local beadwork, spear and shield making. The hotel in Durban had 21 floors and there were views over the Indian Ocean from all the rooms. Here we visited the Botanical Gardens established around 1850 with a range of exotic plants and flowers. The afternoon saw us in Water World to see the dolphins and shake hands with the sea lions.

The next two days we travelled from Durban through Umtata to Port Elizabeth. Here there was the only Braille library in South Africa. That would be a long way to change your books!!

The drive today took us through the Tsitsikama Forest by tractor and trailer, with a guide explaining about the flora and fauna. Whilst cruising in the afternoon on Knysna Lagoon, I thought about our visit to a Cheetah farm the next day and the drive through the spectacular Outenquia Pass on the way. That I was looking forward to, I was not disappointed they allowed us to stroke the beautiful beasts. Lunch was at an ostrich farm and consisted of ostrich scrambled eggs andKeith Africa 2.jpg (79265 bytes) ostrich steaks. Yummy! I then had a ride on an ostrich of which I have the certificate for those who doubt me. Photo by Kathy Martin.  Click to see larger photo, then click back button <-- top left of screen to return.

An early start on Friday but worth it as we were going wine tasting, I preferred the white to the red. On Saturday we set sail again to visit Sea Lion Island then we took the rotating cable car to the top of Table Mountain. Awesome. This was followed by a drive around the Cape of Good Hope.

On the last day we flew from Cape Town to Johannesburg to pick up the flight to LHR airport and home.

What a time I had.
