Lay Ministry in the Diocese of Southwell.
By Hazel Wilson

Our Diocese has been in the forefront in the setting up of courses for those who wish to be equipped for lay service in the Church. Over the last few years a comprehensive course has been developed. Participants may follow one, two or three years study, leading to the Diocesan Certificate in Lay Ministry.

Each Year entails about sixty hours of group study, plus preparation. In years one and two this will be over thirty weeknights.

Year one is open to those of any denomination who would like to grow in confidence in their Christian faith and discipleship.  Submission of written assignments is only strictly necessary if there is the intention to complete the full three year course.

Year two continues the path of discipleship started in year one, and the student is encouraged to think about a Ministry Specialism.  This might take the form of studying to become a Licensed Lay Reader, who will be expected to lead worship and to preach.  A reader might also be called upon to conduct a funeral.   At the successful culmination of a three year course students receive a nationally recognised certificate and are licensed by the Bishop.

The other Recognised Lay Ministries offered in this Diocese are in:-

Children’s Work Youth Work Pastoral Care
Workplace Ministry  Helping Adults Learn  Witness and Evangelism
Music–leading in Worship

Year three is the time for specialisation in one of the above ministries, although it will be possible to take a break before completing the  course.

Until 2004 it was only Lay Readers who studied for a third year. Then, as now, the pattern of study becomes somewhat different, but I believe this varies with the composition of the groups.

In  2003 I was able to gain my Bishop’s Certificate in Lay Ministry after two years.  It had been very rewarding, both in the challenge of new ways of working, and the meeting with a wide variety of pilgrims on the same journey.  My experience bears out the adage ‘You never know what you can do until you try.’
