Holy Trinity Church, Besthorpe
(By Di Smith)

Besthorpe had a chapel of ease in medieval times whose dues formed part of the income of the vicar of South Scarle. Evidence of this can be found in ecclesiastical records of 1535. However the 1635 visitation recorded by the Archdeacon of Nottingham reported “ the Chappell …altogether ruinous”.

Nothing seems to have been done until the Rev. John Dalton became Vicar of south Scarle in 1730. He organised a subscription to build a school house out of the ruins of the chapel. When completed in 1734, it housed the charity school established in the will of George Carver, for the poor children of Besthorpe.

In 1844 the school was demolished to make room for a new chapel. The master’s house was left abutting the new chapel, dedicated to the Holy Trinity and consecrated in 1844. The chapel was used for teaching until a new school which would come under the control of the National Society, was built the next year.

In 1875, a School Board was formed for Besthorpe, South Scarle, Girton and Meering. Local feeling favoured a new school which was opened in October 1879. The former National School building was used as a parish room and the master’s house let. The house fell into ruin and was demolished by 1919.
