The
Collingham Summer Fete in June 2005 was extra special in that it was Bishop
Patrick and Valerie's last official engagement in the village before moving to
their second retirement home in Gloucestershire.

David starts the proceedings by introducing Bishop Patrick and his wife Valerie
(who, as he said, really needed no introduction among their Collingham friends). They had
agreed to officially open the 2005 Fete, as their swansong. A beautiful day in a beautiful setting,
tinged only with slight sadness at losing two wonderful people. (Note
churchwardens hovering to ensure all is OK; and one young man trying to escape a
forthcoming onerous task!)

First, Patrick informs us how such perfect weather had been procured! He then
told us about their super 'first retirement' in the village and how they would
miss being with us (We certainly would miss them - they did work hard among us
and supported our village functions). They now intended to retire near to their
family in the Cotswolds.

Next Valerie took us back to their family beginnings and what a wonderful
time they had had together, working in a (job?) they both thoroughly enjoyed.

They endeared themselves to us by mentioning some of the good times they had
spent in Collingham. And finally, they cajoled us all to spend our money in a good cause by buying
from the stalls set up around James' picturesque garden setting.
Gifts were showered on them in the hope they would change their minds and
stay among the friends they had made in the village. Actually the young man who
was detailed to deliver the gifts finally had stage fright, and the task fell to Marie
to deliver the goods!

And a special gift to James who had allowed his beautiful gardens to be used
for the Fete.

And so we set
off to spend our money at the various stalls set out around the
garden.

Or maybe
we'll have a go on the tombola. Who's the lucky winner this time?

Just what I've always wanted, there's plenty of interesting goodies to be bought.

What shall we put here? The
presentation is very important, isn't it?

And where shall we plant these?
In a world of gardens there's flowers a-plenty!

Lots of patience is needed to sort and process all the raffle tickets. There
were a lot to sort, we must have bought in generous quantities! Some excellent prizes
were about to be won.

A selection of wonderful books (etc) in the cooling dappled shade under the trees.
And at very reasonable prices too. A haven for bargain hunters . . .!

Something lovely to eat, and something lovely to look at . . . You can't beat
home-made jam and chutney. And a superb view to
go with our purchases . . .

Some of these look good enough to drink! The crowds make short work of the
bargains.

Doesn't this look a typically English village scene? Well,
I suppose it is, isn't it! Looks like
the tombola is very popular!

A Summery corner, and everyone is enjoying the warmth and the scenery.

A panoramic view across the hydrangeas. But
do we also spy cream teas?

And still we come in to the fete.
Here's a warm welcome as Derek keeps an eye on the entrance fees. The charge is
a pittance really, but every little helps, and who minds paying a small amount to
visit such a gorgeous event!

Now,
as we were saying, there are those cream teas! Whew! it's good to get one's feet
up for a few minutes.

A very
scenic corner, this; and the cream scones are looking good too!

And finally a well earned rest and chat following a job extremely well done.
Thank you to Patrick and Valerie and all concerned with a highly successful
event.
