Christian Aid
by Marylyn Rayner

Christian Aid was set up over fifty years ago as the agency of the churches. The name denotes the normal origins of its funds but has no bearing on the nature of its beneficiaries. Our benefice does not normally contribute to the work of Christian Aid from the funds received from parishioners, “because we help Christian Aid so much already”.

The main regular financial help is achieved through an envelope collection during Christian Aid Week, which this year (2005) was 15 – 20  May .   The village generously supported this collection and eight of us raised more than £1,300 - which will be worth even more when tax is reclaimed. New collectors are always very welcome – the harvest is heavy but the labourers few.

One of our main fundraising activities is the Lent lunches - a simple but excellent lunch  provided in the Assemblies of God’s room in Baptist Lane by a team of volunteers organized by the Christian Aid representative of Churches Together in Collingham, Jackie Yeomans, who attends the Methodist Church.

Last year Elizabeth Gibson raised over £500 by selling Christmas cards in church.

Christian Aid is an active member of the Trade Justice Movement [TJM], which is run locally by Dr Charlotte Grimley who is the daughter of  the Betty Grimley who featured in the Christian Aid Week literature last year and who came to speak at our Christian Aid service this year. Many of us travelled to Edinburgh from Nottingham overnight and returning overnight, for a peaceful demonstration on July 2 to support the government’s aim to Make Poverty History at the G8 summit. Many people from Southwell also went. A message, preferably in the form of a white band, formed part of a display which we made for the G8 leaders.
