What is the difference between the PCC and the Parish Council? And What does PCC mean? Our Benefice contains the combined parishes of North and South Collingham; and the United Parishes of South Scarle, Besthorpe and Girton with Spalford.

COLLINGHAM PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL

 By Elizabeth Gibson

Like the Parish Council, the Collingham Parochial Church Council is an elected body which is responsible for the running of the two churches in the Benefice. Each year in April, elections are held at the churches' Annual Meeting. All members of the churches' electoral roll are eligible to stand for election to the PCC, and all members are able to vote to elect members of the PCC.

Each year two wardens are elected for each of the Collingham churches, and four new members are elected to serve on the PCC. A member of the PCC serves for three years, after which they have to take a year off before being eligible for re-election. In this way, the PCC at any one time has twelve members. In addition, every three years members are elected to be the Benefice's Representatives on the Deanery Synod - the Benefice is part of the Newark Deanery which has a Synod (or meeting) to deal with the running of the Deanery.

The Rev. David Milner is automatically Chairman of the PCC, and at the first meeting of the new PCC after the Annual Parochial Council Meeting a Secretary and Treasurer are elected by the Council, as are members of the sub-committees which report back to the full council. Church members are co-opted as appropriate to add expertise to committees. The following committees meet: Finance; Buildings - which deals with the care and maintenance of the two Churches and their churchyards; Charitable Giving - which controls the Churches' yearly giving to charities; Child Protection; Social Committee - which arranges functions during each year. Also, three people serve on the "Churches Together in Collingham" committee, and two on the "Fleet" magazine committee.

The whole PCC meets together quarterly, and a Standing Committee made up of the Wardens, Secretary and Treasurer meets between PCC meetings. Sub-Committees report to the full PCC at each meeting, and extra meetings are convened when necessary.
